Motorola C261 Camera Tips

The Motorola C261 camera is quite basic but you can still try to get the most out of it, just as with any other camera. I will show you how to email the pictures to yourself or anyone else, and I will add some tips on getting the best possible pictures with the camera's limited resolution.

Taking the pics

Turn on your camera phone. Click the top right button below where it says "Camera". The camera will turn on. The display shows you the lens view and display the amount of space already used. I can fit about 20 pictures before I run short of space.

Click the button below where it says "Capture" to take the picture. At that point you are given the option to Store or Discard the picture. If you choose "Store" you get 5 more options:

  • Send in message
  • Store Only (I usually choose this option)
  • Apply as wallpaper
  • Apply as screensaver
  • Apply as Phonebook

You can choose Store Only, and you're done with taking the picture.

Sending your pics via email

Once you've stored your pics, you'd like to share them, right? Well, it's not clear how to do that. After leafing through the manual, I decided that I could send the pictures to my email account via an MMS message.

To save time in the long run, first create an email contact in the phonebook for yourself. I call it "Me" and just enter the email address I use for sending myself pictures.

Then go to the messages section of the menu and press "Create" then select MMS as the type of message.

You can start to enter text or choose "INSERT". If you choose "INSERT", you can then choose "Picture"

Then choose Done, choose the email contact to send it to, and you're done.

You can only insert one picture using the INSERT option. You can include more pictures by sending them as attachments. I have been able to attach up to 4 Motorola C261 camera pictures in an MMS message, but the average is somewhere between 2 and 3 pictures. Here's the official Motorola C261 camera phone manual (pdf).

How much does it cost to send pictures

From your camera phone?

Bottom line: 2 units.

When you click send, a message pops up that one unit has been deducted. The phone continues to send the message. The phone displays that another half-unit has been deducted, and by time the message has been sent, my airtime total is two less than when you started.

This amount is the same whether you send one picture or four (the maximum I've managed to send at one time -- there is a space limit, so it depends on the file size of the pictures. Sometimes I can only send one or two because the file sizes are too large, relatively speaking. So if you have a lot of Motorola C261 camera pictures stored, you should send as many as possible at one time to cut down your total airtime costs.

Receiving the MMS message

The email message arrives (in my area) as:

From: ten-digit-phone-number@mms.mycingular.com (nowadays it comes from ten-digit-phone-number@mms.att.net)

Check your spam filter if you can't find it.

Another thing you'll notice, is that because Tracfone doesn't have their own network (they lease it from others) the Motorola C261 camera phone's message appears with another carriers email signature. In this case Cingular(now AT&T).

And here's another picture made with the camera.
