If you buy a Virgin mobile phone online from Virgin, Fedex ground shipping is free for all phones. They have an interesting selection of phones at reasonable prices.
Each Virgin Mobile phone balances a set of basic and advanced features. Generally, each phone has only one advanced feature. So you choose a phone based on which of these higher-end capabilities you want most.
For example, if you want a 1.3 Mpixel camera you have to choose the Cyclops, but then you don't get a keyboard or video camera. If you want a keyboard you choose the Switch_Back, but then you only get a VGA quality camera. And, finally, if you want to record video, you have to choose the Slider Sonic, but settle for a VGA quality camera.
Update: Super Slice
The Super Slice has been one of the hottest selling Virgin Mobile phones. It's frequently sold-out online, and though it's older version (the Slice) is on sale for much less, the Super Slice continues to be much more popular. Among the new features are a camera and blue-tooth capability.
Here is a humorous video showing that you can overdo it with this phone. Enjoy.
Phones
Arc $49.99 - full featured flip style Bluetooth enable phone with VGA camera.
Nokia Shorty was almost free but now discontinued -- basic phone. Similar to basic Nokia 1100 available from Tracfone.
Oystr -- basic color flip phone. Web browser, ringtones etc. Was their entry-level flip phone now replaced by the Marbl.
K10 Royale -- basic open-face style color phone also now discontinued. Why does this remind me of Pulp Fiction? (You could one get a reconditioned K9 for $9.99)
Slice ~ $12 -- thin phone, no camera. Now superceded by the Super Slice, but once, heavily advertised. Looks cool, I admit.
Snapper $79.99 -- 1.3 Megapixel camera flip phone with 5x digital zoom and flash - now apparently discontinued in USA.
Red Cyclops $49.99 -- 1.3 Megapixel flip style camera phone. Originally came in a white color, now discontinued. You can order the current red version of this Virgin Mobile phone only on the web.
Slash $79.99 - VGA-resolution camera slider phone with MP3 player.
Slider Sonic -- VGA resolution (310K pixel) camera phone but records video as well. 32MB memory for storing those photos and videos. Discontinued in USA.
Switch_Back was $99.99 -- another VGA resolution camera phone but this one has a full keyboard for text message, email etc. Has dual screen so you can use it as regular phone without opening up keyboard area. Discontinued in USA and replaced by the Wildcard.
Wildcard $99.99 -- dual screen camera phone with QWERTY keyboard for faster texting. Special editions sometimes available.
Pass It On
Pass on your old Virgin phone to a friend, and you each get $2.50 of airtime when they top up the first time.
